Grab Takes a Bold Step: Acquiring Foodpanda in Taiwan for $600 Million
In a significant move that signals its ambition to expand beyond Southeast Asia, Grab has announced its intention to acquire the Taiwan operations of Foodpanda, a subsidiary of Delivery Hero, for a substantial $600 million in cash. This acquisition, which is still awaiting regulatory approval, is expected to wrap up in the latter half of 2026, with plans to transition users, merchants, and drivers to Grab’s platform by early 2027.
This deal comes on the heels of Uber’s failed attempt to acquire Foodpanda’s Taiwan business just last year, which was blocked by local antitrust regulators citing concerns over competition. At the time, the landscape in Taiwan’s food delivery sector was dominated by Uber Eats and Foodpanda, with the latter claiming a 52% market share while Uber Eats was close behind at 48%. Authorities were concerned that a merger would create a virtual monopoly, controlling around 90% of the market.
However, Grab’s acquisition could present a fresh perspective on competition. By acquiring Foodpanda, Grab would gain a market share of just over 50%, positioning it as a formidable competitor to Uber Eats without establishing a monopoly akin to what was proposed in the previous deal.
“This acquisition represents a natural evolution for Grab, leveraging our experience in the dynamic Southeast Asian market,” remarked Anthony Tan, Group CEO and co-founder of Grab. “With Taiwan’s vibrant urban centers and a population of about 23 million that embraces mobile-first services, we see immense potential for growth in the food and grocery delivery sectors.”
Following the takeover, Grab aims to extend its operations to 21 cities across Taiwan, blending its AI-powered platform with Foodpanda’s extensive local presence. Foodpanda’s Taiwan segment has already demonstrated significant performance, generating approximately $1.8 billion in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV).
By venturing into Taiwan, Grab not only broadens its geographical reach but also accumulates invaluable experience in navigating complex delivery logistics suited for high-density urban environments. This strategic acquisition marks an exciting chapter for Grab as they aim to enhance their offerings in a thriving market.
