A decade ago, Meta enthusiastically joined RE100, a global initiative dedicated to promoting the transition to renewable energy among large corporations. However, recent developments signal a departure from this commitment as the tech giant shifts its focus toward fossil fuels.

The Move Away from RE100

RE100, managed by the UK nonprofit Climate Group, boasts over 400 members, including industry giants like Microsoft, Google, and Apple, all of whom have vowed to source 100% of their energy from renewable avenues. Meta initially signed on in 2016, setting a target to achieve its renewable energy goal by 2020. Yet, the company’s priorities now seem to lean heavily toward natural gas.

Reports indicate that Meta’s withdrawal from RE100 stems from a failure to meet the technical criteria as a result of its substantial investments in new gas power. While the departure is framed as a mutually agreed decision, it strongly highlights a shift in Meta’s energy strategy. The company maintains a commitment to “100% clean and renewable energy,” albeit under different circumstances.

Investment in Natural Gas Infrastructure

In a bold move earlier this year, Meta announced plans to fund seven natural gas plants destined to power its largest data center to date. To date, the firm has confirmed its commitment to ten natural gas projects, signaling an expansive investment in fossil fuel infrastructure.

The significant investment in natural gas does not outright preclude Meta from claiming adherence to renewable energy practices. Tech firms often purchase energy attribute certificates to offset their fossil fuel consumption. However, with Meta’s expansive gas projects—capable of generating enough electricity to power an entire state like South Dakota—achieving true offsetting become increasingly complex.

The Challenge of Sustainability Claims

Analysts warn that as Meta leans more heavily on natural gas, defending a claim of 100% renewable energy becomes exponentially more difficult. The balancing act of maintaining environmental accountability while heavily investing in fossil fuels presents a daunting challenge for the organization.
