Superhuman Expands Horizons: Acquiring Fathom for Enhanced Notetaking Solutions
In a strategic move to bolster its productivity offerings, Superhuman has announced the acquisition of Fathom, a notetaking app supported by Y Combinator. Unlike many competitors who build notetakers from the ground up, Superhuman is choosing the more streamlined approach of integrating an established platform.
AI-powered productivity tools have become the norm, primarily focusing on automating tasks triggered by user commands. However, the real potential lies in enabling AI to take initiative, especially when it comes to extracting actionable items and topics discussed during meetings. This necessity is driving Superhuman and similar entities toward the notetaking domain.
Fathom, founded in 2020, has successfully attracted over $30 million in funding, achieving a valuation of $94 million in 2024, as detailed by PitchBook. Its impressive roster of investors includes notable names like the Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, and several prominent tech figures such as Reddit CEO Steve Huffman and Twitch’s former CEO Emmett Shear.
The platform boasts an appealing free tier, attracting a robust user base of over 400,000 monthly active individuals, with more than 1 million meetings documented through its service to date.
Earlier this year, Superhuman piloted its own notetaking tool, but ultimately opted to purchase Fathom, recognizing the complexities involved in creating a competitive product. Shishir Mehrotra, Superhuman’s CEO, highlighted the challenges faced in their internal tests, which underscored the demand and intricacy within the notetaking landscape.
“We have been exploring this area for some time, and it has certainly boosted our confidence regarding user demand. It also became evident just how sophisticated such tools need to be. Many seem simple at first, but excelling in every aspect of meeting documentation is quite challenging,” Mehrotra noted in a conversation with TechCrunch.
While the specifics of what impressed him about Fathom’s technology remain under wraps, Mehrotra hinted at exciting possibilities for real-time context extraction during meetings through their new notetaker.
The competition in the notetaking sphere is fierce, with startups like Granola, Read AI, and the emerging Wispr all vying for market share and funding. Despite showing growth, many venture-backed notetakers are under pressure to expand their functionalities. This market environment is certainly a factor in Superhuman’s decision to absorb Fathom, with Fathom’s CEO, Richard White, pointing out the potential for massive user engagement thanks to Superhuman’s expansive user base.
“The reach of Superhuman is phenomenal. I’ve always believed that mergers and acquisitions can accelerate product development, especially when it comes to distribution. Operating Fathom independently would necessitate building many features already present in the Superhuman suite,” White remarked.
With a robust platform that already encompasses an email client, document creation tool, calendar, database solutions, and a new AI agent builder, integrating a notetaker enhances Superhuman’s capabilities. This integration positions Superhuman to draft emails, manage data entries, schedule follow-ups, and deploy AI agents to glean insights from meeting data—all while providing users with a streamlined and productive digital ecosystem.
As Superhuman continues to evolve and refine its offerings, the future of AI-driven productivity tools looks promising, with innovative solutions aimed at maximizing efficiency and improving user experience on the horizon.
