Amazon is testing a new feature that incorporates AI-generated hosts discussing product summaries. It seems somewhat similar to Google’s audio overviews, which also feature AI-generated hosts reminiscent of average podcast personalities.
Amazon claims these “AI shopping experts help save time by gathering research and summarizing product highlights from product pages, reviews, and insights.” This raises an important question since Amazon is known for having fake reviews. Some studies suggest that these fraudulent reviews constitute over 40 percent of the total. Are these AI hosts referencing these reviews? Each audio summary will remind you that it is AI-generated, right before an introduction by the “expert” hosts. Amazon describes these hosts as “like having helpful friends discuss potential purchases to make your shopping easier.”
You might be able to experience this feature now. It is currently accessible to a select group of US customers on the mobile app for certain products, like , , and a few other items. Simply tap the “Hear the highlights” button beneath the product. Amazon has stated that it will be expanding this feature to more customers and products soon.
I can see this being beneficial for individuals with visual impairments; however, I listened to several summaries and found that they do not save time. I could review product information, check reviews, and conduct an online search much more quickly than the friendly experts could finish their summaries.
The company claims this feature is advantageous when “multitasking or on the go,” but I personally do not make impulse buys in that way. Do you? This appears to be another AI tool that likely isn’t in high demand, but it could find its place somewhere. While this could be particularly helpful for those with visual impairments, that’s not the angle Amazon is emphasizing.
