DeleteMe Acquires Social Media Security Tool Block Party

Block Party Joins Forces with DeleteMe to Enhance Online Safety

In a major development in the realm of digital security, Tracy Chou, the visionary behind Block Party, announced on Wednesday that the company has been acquired by DeleteMe, a prominent service focused on the removal of personal information from the internet.

Chou, a software engineer and advocate for greater diversity in the tech industry, founded Block Party in 2018 to empower users to combat targeted harassment on Twitter. The idea stemmed from her own tumultuous experiences on the platform, where she felt increasingly vulnerable.

In 2022, Chou successfully raised $4.8 million in seed funding to broaden Block Party’s reach to additional social media platforms just before significant changes swept through Twitter with Elon Musk’s acquisition. As Twitter transitioned to a paid model for accessing its API, Block Party faced financial hurdles. This challenge prompted the company to pivot quickly, leading to the launch of its browser extension designed to “deep clean” social media accounts across a variety of platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and even X.

Reflecting on her past, Chou noted in a blog post, “In another life, I gained a bit of internet fame through activism, which painfully illuminated how exposed I was online.” It was through her journey of securing her own digital presence that she discovered DeleteMe, a service adept at helping individuals rid themselves of unwanted personal information from data brokers and search platforms. This realization inspired her to create Block Party, making the acquisition by DeleteMe a fitting evolution for both companies.

Chou explained how prior to this acquisition, users had to navigate multiple services to find comprehensive protection: “Now, we’ve brought our solutions under one roof, giving users a streamlined option to safeguard their online presence.”

Current users of Block Party can take comfort in knowing that nothing changes immediately. In the coming months, as Block Party integrates with DeleteMe, more information will be shared about enhancements to the service.

Chou concluded her announcement with a powerful reminder: “For many, being open online has come at a significant cost. But we shouldn’t have to choose between self-expression and safety; that was always our goal.”

While the specifics of the acquisition deal remain undisclosed, the union of these two pioneering companies signals a promising future for online safety and privacy.
