Nvidia RTX 5000 Super Cards May Boost VRAM by 50%: Introducing 24GB RTX 5080 Super and 18GB RTX 5070 Super

Rumor mill: It’s widely believed that Nvidia will eventually introduce Super variants of its RTX 5000 series. The main question is whether these versions will address some of the complaints that have made consumer Blackwell one of the least well-received graphics architectures. One of the major criticisms has been the limited VRAM, but rumors suggest that this will be enhanced in the Super editions.

According to reports from China’s Chiphell forums, Nvidia is preparing an RTX 5080 Super with 24GB of VRAM, an upgrade from the standard model’s 16GB. This would bring it in line with the memory capacity of the RTX 4090, 3090, and 3090 Ti.

Nvidia is also purportedly working on an RTX 5070 with 18GB, a 6GB increase from the standard card that comes with 12GB. This would introduce a new VRAM configuration since Nvidia has not previously released a card with 18GB of memory.

While the new cards will maintain the same type of GDDR7 VRAM as the standard versions, it is believed that they will utilize 3GB memory modules to facilitate the unique configurations.

Although it’s wise to approach all such rumors, particularly those from Chiphell forums, with skepticism, there are some factors that support these claims. For example, the RTX 5090 laptop GPU employs 3GB modules and achieves a 24GB capacity.

Additionally, Nvidia reportedly intended to launch a 24GB RTX 5080, but the cost and scarcity of 3GB modules led to the decision to go with a 16GB configuration. We even saw promotional material from MSI indicating a 24GB RTX 5080, which could have been a mistake or a fabrication. Earlier this year, rumors also circulated about a 24GB RTX 5080 variant being in development.

A 50% increase in memory capacity for the cards would be appreciated, especially for the RTX 5070, which, as noted in our review, is currently equipped with a 12GB memory capacity that feels better suited for entry-level products.

However, a user from Chiphell indicated that the performance of the new Super models does not feel significantly faster than their RTX 5000 counterparts. This aligns with the trends seen in previous generation Super models: the RTX 4080 Super is merely 2% faster than the RTX 4080 at 1080p, 3% faster at 1440p, and 4% faster at 4K.

To date, only two desktop Super graphics cards have had more memory than their standard counterparts: the RTX 2060 (6GB) / 2060 Super (8GB), and the RTX 4070 Ti (12GB) / RTX 4070 Ti Super (16GB). Similarly, we found that the RTX 4070 Ti Super is only about 3% to 5% faster than the RTX 4070 Ti.

It was approximately 15 months after the launch of the RTX 4000 series that the Super variants were revealed. If Nvidia adheres to the same timeline, the RTX 5000 Super cards may not be released until about the middle of next year.
