In a recent discussion, Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, revealed that the platform is considering additional steps for users to confirm their humanity before they can create accounts and engage with posts. With the ongoing challenge of bots infiltrating social media, Huffman discussed potential methods for ensuring users are genuine individuals rather than automated accounts.
During an appearance on the TBPN podcast, he outlined a variety of approaches, each with differing levels of intensity. “The lightest option is utilizing biometric features like Face ID or Touch ID,” Huffman explained. “These methods require a user’s physical presence—whether it’s touching their device or using their facial recognition. This allows us to reasonably affirm that a genuine person is behind the screen.”
Apart from biometric verification, Huffman mentioned that Reddit could explore decentralized third-party services that do not demand identification. However, he also acknowledged that some options may necessitate stricter measures, such as identity verification services.
The rise of bots has significantly increased across various social media platforms, including Reddit, where they have been known to engage in activities that undermine user experience, like creating spam or even conducting undisclosed experiments. Although Reddit has not yet finalized a user verification strategy, Huffman highlighted the company’s commitment to preserving user anonymity. However, employing methods that require personal identification might become a contentious issue for users who cherish their privacy.
“One of our core commitments is that we don’t collect personal data, but we do need to ensure that our users are real people,” asserted Huffman. “Finding a balance will be a gradual process for us, as well as for other platforms.”
Commenting on the matter, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, expressed his surprise at the potential implementation of Face ID verification but acknowledged the need for solutions against the influx of fake accounts. Ohanian added, “Selling the idea of facial recognition to Reddit users, especially casual visitors, may prove to be quite a challenge.”
