Joby Aviation Expands Defense Sector through $500 Million Acquisition

Joby Aviation Takes Flight into Defense: A $500 Million Acquisition Deal

In a strategic move to solidify its foothold in the defense sector, Joby Aviation has announced its acquisition of Resonant Sciences for $500 million in cash and stock, as revealed in a regulatory filing on Tuesday. This significant transaction marks Joby’s continuous effort to expand beyond electric urban air taxis into the realm of advanced defense solutions.

Headquartered in Ohio, Resonant Sciences specializes in radio frequency and sensor technologies. Under Joby’s umbrella, Resonant will be transformed into a distinct defense division, headed by co-founder and CEO J. Micah North. This new unit will oversee all of Joby’s defense-focused endeavors, including the development of turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft, as well as enhancing autonomy technology systems.

With this new division in place, Joby aims to concentrate its resources on certifying, manufacturing, and launching its electric air taxi services, a cornerstone of its business strategy. Known for its innovative approach to urban air mobility, Joby has garnered attention for its vision of a network of electric air taxis that facilitate the quick and efficient transport of people and goods across urban landscapes.

In the last couple of years, Joby has become increasingly active in defense. Last year, the company initiated a collaboration with defense contractor L3Harris Technologies to explore the development of a new class of aircraft—specifically, a gas-turbine hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft designed for autonomous flight in defense operations. This advanced VTOL will build on Joby’s existing S4 aircraft platform, which is primarily powered by an all-electric system. Notably, in 2024, Joby showcased a hydrogen-electric hybrid variant during a government contract, achieving an impressive flight of 521 miles—over twice the distance of its battery-electric prototype.

The financial prospects of acquiring Resonant Sciences are promising for Joby, which has reported trailing revenue of $100 million over the past year. This acquisition opens doors to classified U.S. government programs and enhances Joby’s offerings of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Joby’s strategy of generating revenue through acquisitions isn’t new; developing and certifying eVTOLs is an expensive and time-consuming process, which often leads to investor impatience regarding returns.

Since going public in 2021 via a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Joby has actively sought short-term revenue opportunities to reassure its investors. Recently, the company acquired Blade Air Mobility’s helicopter rideshare business for around $125 million. This acquisition not only provided a streamlined network of terminals in strategic locations like New York City but also significantly contributed to Joby’s revenue; the company reported $38.6 million in revenue for the second quarter, with $36.2 million stemming from Blade.

As Joby Aviation continues to chart its course in both the electric taxi and defense markets, the integration of Resonant Sciences could be a game-changer, enhancing its innovative capabilities while ensuring a steady revenue stream. This bold leap signals Joby’s commitment to redefining transportation on multiple fronts, propelling them further into the future.
