<p id="why-it-matters"><strong>Facepalm:</strong> If you're considering a new gaming laptop with the RTX 5090 mobile, you might want to think twice before spending your money. A notable hardware reviewer suggests that this new GPU provides minimal performance improvements over its predecessor in a wide range of popular games.</p>
<p>According to initial comparison tests by Australian tech reviewer and YouTuber Jarrod Farncomb, the RTX 5090 mobile shows only a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpG4SBJRx7k">slight performance increase</a> compared to the RTX 4090 in most titles. On average, an RTX 5090-equipped laptop achieved about 66 frames per second at 4K across 25 well-known games, while an RTX 4090 laptop, despite a slower CPU and DDR5 RAM, hit 65 fps.</p>
<p>Things worsened at 1080p, where the RTX 4090 laptop outperformed the newer model, reaching 133 fps compared to 132 fps for the RTX 5090. At 1440p, the difference was minimal, with the two laptops achieving 106 and 107 fps, respectively. These benchmarks indicate that the new GPU doesn't deliver any meaningful real-world performance advantage over the previous generation.</p>

<p>Farncomb pointed out that the RTX 5090 struggled with both older games and newer titles, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Alan Wake 2, and Stalker 2, where the RTX 4090 was up to 12.5 percent faster.</p>
<p>While the RTX 5090 did excel in some areas, outpacing the 4090 in a few popular games, it demonstrated a 20 percent advantage in Cyberpunk 2077 and an 18 percent lead in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.</p>
<p class="tsadinc">The primary difference between the two GPUs lies in power efficiency, with the RTX 5090 laptop providing significantly better battery life than its RTX 4090 counterpart. However, Farncomb attributes part of this to the newer Arrow Lake-HX CPU, designed for greater power efficiency compared to the older Raptor Lake Refresh chips.</p>
<p class="tsadinc">Both laptops used in the comparison were XMG Neo 16s, albeit with different hardware configurations. The previous XMG Neo 16 (2024) featured an Intel Core i9-14900HX paired with 32 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and an RTX 4090, while the newer XMG Neo 16 (2025) was equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, also with 32 GB of DDR5-6400 RAM and an RTX 5090.</p>
