Waymo Set to Roll Out Robotaxi Services in Sacramento and San Diego
In groundbreaking news for California’s transportation landscape, Waymo has just secured the green light from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to broaden its autonomous ride-hailing services. This exciting expansion will mark the debut of Waymo’s robotaxi operations in Sacramento and San Diego, alongside the enhancement of existing services in the bustling San Francisco Bay Area and the vibrant city of Los Angeles.
The CPUC’s decision comes in response to Waymo’s dedicated efforts to address safety protocols, a request put forth earlier this year. Initially submitted in January, Waymo’s plea outlined a comprehensive safety strategy aimed at enabling rides in the newly announced service regions. Despite encountering some administrative hurdles, which temporarily placed the request on hold, it seems that all concerns have been amicably resolved, paving the way for this innovative transport solution.
Waymo celebrated this major milestone on social media, stating, “Big news for the Golden State! We have received the CPUC’s approval to expand our autonomous ride-hailing service across the SF Bay Area and LA, and bring our service to Sacramento and San Diego. Expansion will be gradual and guided by our safety framework.”
With this approval, Waymo is set to serve a total of 18 counties stretching from northern to southern California, including prominent areas such as Alameda, Contra Costa, Los Angeles, and many more. It’s key to note, however, that the rollout will be phased and carefully monitored to maintain safety standards.
Looking ahead, Waymo has plans to initiate operations in Sacramento by early 2026 and in San Diego, with fully autonomous services reportedly on the horizon in several additional cities, including Tampa and Las Vegas. The latest permission allows Waymo to utilize its existing fleet of Jaguar I-Pace vehicles, as well as new Ojai robotaxis—state-of-the-art minivans designed in partnership with the Chinese automaker Zeekr.
As the automation revolution gains momentum, Waymo’s strategic deployment will serve as a crucial test for the future of urban mobility across California, ushering in a new era of transit that makes use of cutting-edge technology to enhance commuting experiences.
