Uber to Acquire Delivery Division of Turkey’s Getir

Uber Expands Horizons: Acquiring Getir’s Delivery Operations in Turkey

In a strategic move, Uber has announced its acquisition of Getir’s delivery segment, a pivotal player in Turkey’s startup scene, which has faced its share of ups and downs. This landmark deal was revealed on Monday, marking a significant milestone for both companies.

Uber is initially investing $335 million for Getir’s food delivery operations. Additionally, it will allocate $100 million to acquire a 15% interest in Getir’s grocery, retail, and water delivery sectors, with plans to complete the acquisition over the coming years.

The buyer, Uber, is purchasing the business directly from Getir’s principal investor, Mubadala, the prominent Emirati sovereign wealth fund. Reports suggest that Mubadala had been exploring the sale of its shares in Getir since last year amidst a challenging landscape for the startup, which once boasted a valuation of $12 billion.

Founded in 2015, Getir gained swift traction, expanding aggressively both in Turkey and internationally, particularly in the U.S. and Europe. The startup made headlines for its rapid growth, particularly during the pandemic. However, as demand for food and grocery delivery decreased post-lockdowns, Getir faced mounting challenges. In 2024, the company restructured its operations, which included closing locations and letting go of thousands of employees across the U.S., U.K., and Europe to refocus on its domestic market.

In a noteworthy conflict last year, Getir’s co-founders engaged in a legal battle over a restructuring proposal from Mubadala, a move that was ultimately deemed illegal by a Dutch court.

Getir has successfully raised an impressive $2.4 billion throughout its existence, with court documents revealing the company’s assets were valued at $374 million recently.

“This transaction underscores the resilience and progress of Getir, especially in the past year,” stated Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, deputy group CEO at Mubadala.

Uber plans to merge the newly acquired services with Trendyol Go, its food delivery arm in Turkey, which was acquired for $700 million last May. Notably, Getir’s food delivery division alone reported gross bookings exceeding $1 billion in 2025, a 50% increase from the previous year.

This acquisition aligns with Uber’s recent performance, whereby its delivery segment saw revenues of $4.89 billion in Q4—a 30% increase compared to the same quarter the prior year. The company highlighted that the fastest growth was observed in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

With this acquisition, Uber is not only broadening its footprint in Turkey but also consolidating its position in the competitive landscape of food and grocery delivery services. As both companies embark on this new journey, the industry will be watching closely to see how this integration unfolds.
